1. To indicate a physical location on, within, or attached to a rope.

   குழந்தை கயிற்றில் தொங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தது.

   Kuḻantai kayiṟṟil toṅkik koṇṭiruntatu.

   The child was hanging on the rope.

2. To describe a state of being bound, caught, or entangled by a rope, either literally or metaphorically.

   அவன் கயிற்றில் சிக்கிய மீனைப் போலத் துடித்தான்.

   Avaṉ kayiṟṟil cikkiya mīṉaip pōlat tuṭittāṉ.

   He struggled like a fish caught in a net (or rope).

3. To imply an action performed using the rope as a medium or support.

   கயிற்றில் ஏறி மரத்தின் உச்சிக்குச் சென்றான்.

   Kayiṟṟil ēṟi marattiṉ uccikku cceṉṟāṉ.

   He climbed the rope and went to the top of the tree.

Grammar tips

Common mistake: Writers sometimes confuse 'கயிற்றில்' (on/in the rope) with 'கயிறால்' (by means of the rope). While 'கயிற்றில் ஏறுதல்' implies using the rope, 'கயிறால் கட்டுதல்' explicitly states the means. For example, 'அவன் கயிற்றில் கட்டினான்' (He tied on the rope) is different from 'அவன் கயிறால் கட்டினான்' (He tied with the rope).

Tip: 'கயிற்றில்' is the locative case of 'கயிறு' (rope). It indicates location (on, in, at) or sometimes the medium through which an action occurs.
