User Guide
A detailed walkthrough of TamilGrammarCheck — from writing your first sentence to exporting a polished document. Every feature is explained with visual examples below.
1. The Editor Layout
When you open TamilGrammarCheck, you see a split-screen layout: the text editor on the left and the analysis panel on the right. The toolbar sits at the top of the editor with all your formatting and input controls. Here is what it looks like:
The editor shows your Tamil text as an A4 page with proper margins. Errors are highlighted inline with coloured underlines — red for grammar, yellow for spelling, and blue for punctuation. The analysis panel lists every suggestion as a card you can accept or dismiss.
2. Writing Tamil Text
There are three ways to get Tamil text into the editor. Use whichever method suits you best — they all work together seamlessly.
Type directly in Tamil
If you have a Tamil keyboard installed on your device, type directly into the editor. The text appears on the A4 page as you type.
Use English-to-Tamil transliteration
Type English letters and a popup shows Tamil suggestions in real time. Press Space or Enter to insert the highlighted suggestion. No Tamil keyboard needed.
Dictate using your voice
Click the microphone icon in the toolbar and speak. When you stop, your words are inserted at the cursor — in Tamil while the தமிழ் switch is on, or in English while it is off.
Paste your text
Copy text from any source — a Word document, web page, email or PDF — and paste it into the editor. Tamil characters are kept intact.
3. English to Tamil Transliteration
Transliteration converts your English keystrokes into Tamil script. As you type, a dropdown popup appears with numbered Tamil word suggestions. Here is an example:
How to use it
- Start typing any Tamil word using English letters (e.g. "vanakkam")
- A popup appears with Tamil suggestions — the first one is highlighted
- Press Space or Enter to insert the highlighted suggestion
- Use arrow keys (↑ ↓) to navigate between suggestions before selecting
- Press Escape to dismiss the popup and keep your English text
- Multiple word choices let you pick the exact spelling you need
4. Dictate — Speech to Tamil
The Dictate feature uses your browser's speech recognition to turn your voice into text — Tamil by default, or English when you switch the தமிழ் toggle off. Speak instead of typing: ideal for long-form writing, accessibility, or when you think faster than you type.
How to use it
- Choose the language with the தமிழ் switch in the toolbar — on for Tamil (the default), off for English
- Click the 🎤 microphone button — it turns into a blue "Listening" indicator with a moving sound wave
- Allow microphone access if prompted by your browser
- Speak clearly at a natural pace
- Click "Listening" to stop — your words are inserted at the cursor
- If the microphone is blocked, you are offline, or nothing was heard, a message appears under the toolbar
- Needs a browser with built-in speech recognition, such as Chrome, Edge, or Safari — the button is greyed out elsewhere
Speak in complete sentences for better accuracy. Pause briefly between sentences to let the recogniser process your words before continuing.
5. The Toolbar — Formatting & Controls
The toolbar gives you full word-processor-level control over your document. Here is every button group explained:
Undo & Redo
The ↶ and ↷ arrows step backwards or forwards through your edits — text changes, formatting, deletions, and insertions are all tracked.
Font & Size
Choose from 9 fonts optimised for Tamil rendering: Mukta Malar, Hind Madurai, Latha, Vijaya, Noto Sans Tamil, Arial Unicode MS, Times New Roman, Arial, and Courier New. Set the font size from 8pt to 72pt using the size dropdown.
Text Formatting
- Bold (B) — Make selected text bold (Ctrl+B)
- Italic (I) — Italicise selected text (Ctrl+I)
- Underline (U) — Add an underline (Ctrl+U)
- Strikethrough (S) — Draw a line through text
- Text Colour (A) — Change the colour of selected text using a colour picker
- Highlight (ab) — Apply a background highlight colour to text
- Clear Formatting (T̸) — Strip all formatting from selected text back to plain
Alignment
- Align Left — Default text alignment
- Align Centre — Centre text horizontally
- Align Right — Align text to the right margin
- Justify — Spread text evenly across the full page width
Lists & Indentation
- Bullet List — Create an unordered list with bullet markers
- Numbered List — Create an ordered list with sequential numbers
- Increase Indent — Push the current block further right
- Decrease Indent — Move the current block back left
Links & Tables
Click the link icon to insert a hyperlink — you will be prompted for the URL. Click it again on an existing link to remove it. The table icon inserts a 3×3 table with a header row that you can expand by adding rows or columns as needed.
6. Grammar, Spelling & Punctuation Corrections
After you type or paste Tamil text, TamilGrammarCheck analyses it automatically (or click "Analyze" manually). Errors are highlighted inline in the editor, and each one appears as a suggestion card in the analysis panel. Here are examples of each type:
Each card shows the original text, the suggested correction, and an explanation in Tamil for why the change is recommended. You can:
- Click a suggestion card to highlight the error in the editor
- Click "Accept" to apply the correction to your text
- Click "Dismiss" to reject the suggestion and keep your original text
- Use "Accept All" at the bottom of the panel to apply every correction at once
7. Choosing a Writing Tone
The tone selector in the analysis panel tells the AI what kind of writing you are targeting. This changes how suggestions are generated — formal writing gets different corrections than casual or creative writing. Select your tone before running analysis for best results.
For example, a word like "நிம்மதியா" might be acceptable in Casual tone but flagged as informal in Formal tone, where "நிம்மதியாக" would be recommended instead.
8. Understanding the Quality Score
After analysis, a quality score from 0 to 100 appears in the analysis panel. The score is colour-coded to give you an instant overview of your text's quality:
The score updates in real time as you accept or dismiss suggestions — watch it climb as you work through each correction.
9. Saving Your Work
When you are signed in, select Save to store your document. Auto Save is off by default; turn it on in Account Settings if you want automatic saving:
- When enabled, Auto Save runs 2 seconds after you stop typing
- The document header shows the save status: "Saved", "Saving...", or "Unsaved"
- Click the "Save" button to save manually at any time
- Both your plain text and rich-formatted content are preserved
- Rename your document by editing the title field in the document header
Access all your saved documents from the Documents page, where you can open, rename, or delete them. Documents are synced to your account, so you can access them from any device.
10. Exporting Documents
Once your text is corrected and formatted, export it in the format you need. The filename is based on your document title.
- PDF — A print-ready document with all formatting, fonts, and colours intact (Pro)
- Word document — An editable .docx that keeps your headings, bold, italics, lists, and tables (Pro)
- Text file — Just your words, one line per paragraph, that opens in any editor (free with an account)
Sign in, then select the download icon at the top of the editor and choose a format. The file downloads automatically to your device. Free accounts can download the text file; PDF and Word are part of the Pro plan.
- Copy — All of your text, with its formatting, ready to paste into Word, Google Docs, an email or anywhere else
Select the copy button at the top of the editor. You don't need to sign in to copy.
11. Bringing In Existing Text
To check an existing document, open it in the app you wrote it in (for example Microsoft Word or Google Docs), copy the text, and paste it into the editor. Tamil characters are kept intact.
12. Keyboard Shortcuts
Speed up your workflow with these keyboard shortcuts:
- Ctrl + B — Toggle bold on selected text
- Ctrl + I — Toggle italic on selected text
- Ctrl + U — Toggle underline on selected text
- Ctrl + Z — Undo the last action
- Ctrl + Y — Redo the last undone action
- Ctrl + S — Save the current document
- Ctrl + A — Select all text in the editor
13. Tips for Best Results
Set the tone before running analysis — the AI gives different and more relevant suggestions when it knows whether you are writing a formal letter or a casual social media post.
Review suggestions one by one rather than using "Accept All" if you want to preserve your personal writing style. Not every suggestion may match your intent.
Use transliteration for speed and switch to direct Tamil typing for precision — both methods work inside the same editor and you can mix them freely.
Dictate longer passages and then use the grammar checker to polish them — this is often faster than typing everything out manually.
Sign in to save and sync documents. You can turn on Auto Save in Account Settings. Saved documents will be accessible from any device after you save them.
Download a PDF for sharing or printing, or a Word document to keep editing. Copying the text into Microsoft Word or Google Docs works too.
