Meaning and examples

1. Indicating accompaniment or being together with someone or something.

   அவன் தன் நண்பனுடன் கூட விளையாடச் சென்றான்.

   Avan than nanbanudan kūda viḷaiyāḍa seṉṟāṉ.

   He went to play along with his friend.

2. Used as an emphatic particle meaning 'even'.

   அந்தச் சிறிய குழந்தைக்குக் கூட இந்த உண்மை தெரியும்.

   Andhaச் siṟiya kuzhandhaikkuk kūda indha uṇmai theriyum.

   Even that small child knows this truth.

3. Used to denote inclusion or addition, equivalent to 'also'.

   அவள் வந்தாள், அவளது தம்பியும் கூட வந்தான்.

   Avaḷ vandāḷ, avaḷadhu thambiyum kūda vandāṉ.

   She came, and her younger brother came as well.

Grammar tips

Common mistake: தவறாக எழுதுவது: 'அவன் கூடவே வந்தான்' என்பதற்குப் பதிலாக 'அவன் கூட வந்தான்' என்று மட்டுமே எழுதுவது சில நேரங்களில் பொருளை மாற்றக்கூடும். 'கூட' என்பதுடன் 'ஏ' விகுதி சேர்த்து 'கூடவே' என்று எழுதும்போது அழுத்தம் தெளிவாகப் புலப்படும்.

Tip: 'கூட' என்ற சொல்லை இணைச் சொல்லாகவும் (accompaniment) உறுதியிடல் சொல்லாகவும் (emphasis) எங்குப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும் என்பதைச் சூழலுக்கு ஏற்பத் துல்லியமாகத் தீர்மானியுங்கள்.
